Working with the Law Reform and Social Justice program at the ANU College of Law

Positive Youth is exceptionally pleased to be working with the Law Reform and Social Justice program at the ANU College of Law. We are supporting a number of student interns and volunteers, such as Nic Langsworth (featured here), to complete several research projects.

Our intern, Taylor Heslington, also a law student at the ANU College of Law, is completing a submission to the Australian Senate Select Committee on Autism. We think programs and services based on positive youth development theory and practice, and tailored to the needs of young people with autism, could realistically be deployed to help these young people successfully navigate school and community, and turn them away from the juvenile justice system. Our volunteers are working on projects related to the impact of COVID-19 on young peoples’ access to welfare and work, and investigating the transferability of successful positive youth development initiatives from the US to Australia.

Through its teaching curriculum, academic research and social justice initiatives, Law Reform and Social Justice at the ANU College of Law provides opportunities for students to explore and interrogate the complex role of law in society, and the part that lawyers play in promoting both change and stability.

Positive Youth is so pleased to be working with LRSJ because it gives us an opportunity to expose law students to opportunities to see law in action – to see how it impacts young people in particular – and to critique the oppressive nature of some aspects of some legal institutions, and to imagine solutions and ways to effect change.
